Rebel medal, médaille pour rebelle

People are usually rewarded for their bravery. I thought it could be fun to be rewarded for being mischievous. For this brooch I use the technique of folding a silver sheet. I will explain more this technique in a next message. The needle is forged to improve its stiffness. The patina I use is liver of sulfur.

L’idée est de créer une médaille en l’honneur d’être un rebelle. Pour créer cette étoile j’ai plié une feuille d’argent. J’expliquerai mieux cette technique dans un prochain message. L’aiguille de la broche est forgée pour augmenter sa rigidité. La patine est faite au sulfure de potasse.

Stone setting, sertissage de pierre

This engraving block is very convenient for setting gemstones.
For the setting tool I use a bronze rod with a wooden handle.

Cette boule de graveur est bien pratique pour sertir les pierres. Comme poussoir, j’utilise un axe en bronze monté sur une poignée en bois.

Aquamarine ring, bague aigue-marine

I remember visiting the Blois castle in France and having been impressed by the portrait of Catherine de Medicis. This ring is inspired by this impression. I used a pretty aquamarine gemstone. The plate around the bezel has been patterned using a custom homemade stamp.

J’ai été très impressionné par le portrait de Catherine de Médicis au château de Blois. J’ai créé cette bague pour évoquer ce souvenir. Je l’ai sertie d’une très belle aigue-marine. Le tour du chaton est décoré avec un poinçon que j’ai façonné.

Pulcinella ring, bague Polichinelle

Pulcinella is a hunchbacked theater character. I have mounted the sapphire gemstone between the 2 humps. Rhodium plating is a convenient way to avoid the inner side of the bezel to oxidize. I use a plating pen from Pepetools. Voltage set to 12.5V.

Polichinelle est la base d’inspiration pour cette bague. J’ai monté un beau saphir au milieu des 2 bosses. Le fond du chaton est plaqué rhodium. J’utilise pour cela un crayon électrique à galvaniser de chez Pepetools. Le voltage est réglé à 12,5Volts.

Faceted heart construction, coeur à facettes

I worked on a pendant this weekend. The top plate is engraved first with deep grooves. I then formed it to this kind of pyramid shape. Finally, the sides are soldered piece by piece. The back plate is 1.5mm thick.

J'ai fait un pendant ce weekend. La plaque du haut (1mm d’épaisseur) est d'abord incisée. Je lui donne ensuite sa forme en la pliant. Enfin, je soude les côtés. La plaque du dos fait 1,5mm d'épaisseur.

Sapphire ring, bague saphir

I started a new ring using the studs that I casted in sand.
I find these little forms interesting to investigate.

J’ai commencé une nouvelle bague avec les clous que j’avais coulés précédemment. Ces petits accessoires offrent de nombreuses possibilités d’utilisation.

Sand casting silver, argent fonte au sable

I needed a few studs for a ring. I used the method of sand casting, fast and efficient. The sand I use is a mixture of pure white silica sand and 30% bentonite clay. The hardest part is to add the right amount of water to the sand. Too little water, the clay doesn't bind the sand grains. Too much, there will be a lot of steam coming out. That will give a porous cast.

Pour la fabrication d’une bague j’avais besoin de petits clous en argent. Je les ai coulés dans le sable. Le sable que j’emploie, est un mélange de sable de quartz et de 30% d’argile bentonite. Le plus délicat est de doser la quantité d’eau contenue dans le sable. S’il y en a trop peu, le sable s’émiette, s’il y en a trop, il y aura trop de vapeur d’eau lors de la coulée du métal en fusion. Ce qui rendra la pièce poreuse.

Electro-etching silver, gravure electrolytique de l'argent

I started to experiment etching silver with electricity. It worked faster that I thought. The silver plate, which I soldered to a copper wire, is connected to the anode (the + side). For the cathode, I used simply a stainless steel wire. The current is provided by a small car battery charger. The resist I used to protect the silver, is nail polish. The electrolytic solution is diluted nitric acid.

J’expérimente la gravure d’une plaque d’argent à l’électricité. Ca marche plus vite que je pensais. La plaque d’argent, que j’ai soudé à un file de cuivre, est connectée à l’anode (+). Pour la cathode, j’utilise simplement un fil d’inox. Le courant vient d’un petit chargeur de batterie. L’argent est protégé avec du vernis à ongle. Le bain est une solution très diluée d’acide nitrique.

Ruby ring, bague rubis

New ring in silver and 14 k gold with a pretty ruby inspired by roman jewellery. I used a piece of flat steel (1mm thick) that I rolled on the mill with the silver sheet to create the groove on the band. Worked nice.

Voici une bague en argent et or 14 carats, sertie d’un rubis. Je me suis inspiré de l’époque romaine comme point de départ. Je lamine la feuille d’argent (1,8mm)  avec une bande d’acier (1mm) qui va y imprimer un relief en creux. Cette technique me permet de créer les 2 épaules sur le jonc.

Je pars d’une plaque d’argent que je scie. J’y soude le chaton. Je sertis la pierre. Ca m’a pris 5 heures pour les faire. En calculant la pause café.

Spinel ring, bague avec spinelle

I finished a new ring this weekend. I used a lovely blue spinel gemstone that I acquired in June at the HK Jewellery Fair. There was a booth from Sri Lanka that sold only small faceted cut gemstone of all kind and of all colours. A candy for the eyes. Couldn't resist I got a few. This ring uses 2 silver studs, carved from a silver bar that was cast in an ingot mold. I also used my newly bought pen plating device to Rhodium plate the inside of the bezel. I noticed that bezels oxidize and if they are set with a transparent stone the stone looks darker. Rhodium plating avoid that kind of trouble.

J’ai utilisé pour cette bague un spinelle que j’avais acheté en juin au salon de la bijouterie de Hong Kong. Parmi les stands, j’ai découvert un exposant venant de Sri Lanka qui vendait que des petites pierres taillées. Un vrai régal pour les yeux. Je leur ai acheté quelques pierres. Pour cette bague, j’ai soudé deux petits clous que j’avais sculptés dans une barre d’argent. J’ai plaqué au rhodium le fond du chaton pour éviter son oxydation.   

Just started..., c'est le début...

I finally started a blog. It was a beautiful, sunny day today in Hong Kong. We went to a classical music concert at the headquarter of Radio TV Hong Kong. Loved it!

J'ai enfin commencé un blog. On est allé aujourd'hui à un concert de musique classique à la maison de la radio de Hong Kong. Ca a été un très agréable moment.
