Stars ring for Brian K., Bague étoilée pour Brian K.

Brian has commissioned me to make this ring to replace his lost wedding ring. I roll a strip of steel with the silver sheet to make a groove in the band. This will create the 2 flanges that give stiffness to the ring. The star pattern is embossed with a custom-made star stamp. Once soldered I adjust the ring to the requested size, in that case # 24. The ring is finally patinated and brushed.

Je lamine la feuille d'argent (1.8mm) avec une bande d'acier (0.8mm) pour créer les 2 épaulements de la bague. Ca la rend plus rigide. Le motif étoilé est martelé avec un poinçon fait maison. Une fois l'anneau fermé et soudé, j'ajuste la taille (n°24). Je patine et donne un fini brossé.

Embossing punch and die, poinçon et matrice

I make this punch out of a steel rod with a file. To harden it, I heat it till it is red hot then quench it in water. Now that I have the punch, I am able to make the die. To do so, I heat a square bar in my furnace and when it is red hot, I quickly secure it on the vise. I hammer the punch on top of the bar with a few blows. The steel bar is softened by the heat and the punch marks the metal easily. I use these custom made tools to design rings embossed with a pattern.

Le poinçon est façonné à la lime dans un barreau d'acier. Pour le durcir, je le chauffe au rouge et le trempe dans un seau d'eau. Avec ce poinçon je vais pouvoir faire la matrice. Pour cela je chauffe une autre barre au rouge. Je la fixe dans l'étau, pose mon poinçon à son sommet. Je frappe fortement le poinçon avec un marteau pour transférer dans la barre l'empreinte de celui-ci. J'utilise ces deux outils conjointement pour créer un motif qui se répète sur mes bagues.

I use steel rods from discarded printers. The rod is cut and sized on the lathe.
The design is shaped using the saw and files. I harden the steel by heating it to a cherry red then quench it in water. Only the tip of the rod is heated because the end that receives the hammer blows should stay tempered.

Je récupère les axes en acier de vieilles imprimantes. Je les coupe et les prépare sur mon tour. Le dessin du poinçon est créé à la scie et  à la lime. Pour durcir le  poinçon, je le chauffe au rouge et le plonge ensuite dans l’eau. Simplement la tête est chauffée, car l’autre extrémité qui reçoit les coups de marteau doit rester malléable (acier revenu).
